Presenter:
Geena Iga Kuson
Date:
Tuesday 12 May | 11:00am to 11:30am
Presentation Description:
This lightning talk will describe the current effort to create a research team at Pacific Adventist University Library, Papua New Guinea to conduct an academic research podcast. Many students and staff – undergraduate, postgraduate and faculty members have conducted research studies as part of their academic requirements and coursework. Many of these written works have been catalogued in written format and are provided in special collections in the library. These collections are well taken care of by librarians. It is unfortunate that only few users are noticed to use these collections and discover significant research findings that could be beneficial to the surrounding communities and organizations around the country and the world if they are commonly accessed and implemented.
An academic library research podcast team of interdisciplinary schools will participate in different aspects of the research podcast from schools such as business, nursing, arts and humanities, science and theology. This effort is modelled upon the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) providing podcasts; this podcast will be distinct in its focus on undergraduate, postgraduate and faculty research. The focus group of study will be researchers of each school. An inclusion criterion of students and staff conducting research and an exclusion criterion of university students and staff not engaged with research activities. The purpose of developing a podcast studio is to inspire undergraduate and novice researchers to seek research opportunities and aim for undergraduate and post graduate degrees while enriching their research learning experiences. The research aims will focus on content delivery of research findings and implementation. This effort is just underway; interested librarians, faculty and students are invited to attend the presentation and consider the idea of hosting a research podcast in the future that may develop effective research communication techniques and enhance effective library services.
The idea has emerged from a librarian to create a research podcast and involve students and faculty participation at Pacific Adventist University library. To achieve this plan, we needed to involve other departments in the set-up process in the university such as Media, Information and Communication Technology team (ICT), and the Office of Postgraduate and Research. We are truly excited of this project because of its great potential and capacity to improve research communication and deliver research result contents to researchers, business houses, policy firms and government houses. This planned podcast will jump start research endeavors for undergraduates, postgraduates and faculty members. In the allotted time of 8 minutes, I plan to discuss the inspiration and plan for creating a research podcast, including anticipated timeline and survey for students and faculty participants.
