Presenter:

Date:

Presentation Description:
This presentation will inspire academic librarians to see their libraries as platforms for thought leadership, collaboration, and community resilience. Delegates will discover practical strategies and real-world examples of how library-led initiatives can spark social cohesion and global impact.
Western Sydney University Library has demonstrated the transformative potential of academic libraries through its Thought Leadership Event Series, delivering 32 events since November 2022. These programs have tackled critical themes such as climate action, Indigenous knowledge systems, peacebuilding, gender equity, and disability inclusion. Complementary initiatives – ranging from youth engagement and multilingual programs to well-being activities and collaborative exhibitions – showcase how libraries can connect diverse communities with academic expertise.
These efforts illustrate a powerful truth: libraries are more than information providers. They are convenors of dialogue, champions of inclusion, and facilitators of research impact. By aligning with the university’s global leadership in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) – ranked #1 worldwide in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for four consecutive years – the library demonstrates how strategic outreach can amplify institutional values and societal impact.
At the heart of this work is the library’s role as a bridge-builder, linking researchers, policymakers, cultural institutions, NGOs, and community groups to co-create solutions. By positioning the library as a trusted, neutral space, these programs show how libraries can lead societal conversations and foster resilience.
The presentation will also highlight the library’s contribution to the national Community Cohesion Initiative, delivered in partnership with the Office of Community Cohesion (Department of Home Affairs) and the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). As one of ten university libraries selected to deliver six funded programs between August 2025 and April 2026, Western Sydney University Library is advancing justice, inclusion, and stronger community connections.
Evaluation is embedded in every program, using participant feedback, engagement analytics, and open-access reporting to ensure continuous improvement. Outcomes are shared through the Western Open Access e-publications series, including Sustainable Development Without Borders: Western Sydney to the World (2025 and forthcoming 2026 editions). Event recordings are preserved in the library’s Thought Leadership Event Archive, ensuring long-term accessibility and impact.
This session will equip librarians with ideas and frameworks to replicate or adapt similar initiatives in their own contexts. By leveraging their convening power, neutrality, and commitment to access, libraries can amplify diverse voices, model collaborative problem-solving, and advance sustainable futures—locally, nationally, and globally.
