Workshop - Respect and Recognition in Practice: Facilitating Ongoing Workplace Dialogue
Workshop Description:
This facilitated workshop is designed for library staff who have completed or are currently undertaking the Respect and Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, Cultures and Country course, and provides a supportive space for reflection, sharing of experiences, and exploration of practical implementation together.
Through guided discussion and reflective activities, participants will explore what they have learned about cultural protocols, Indigenous knowledge systems, and meaningful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The session encourages workshop participants to voice questions, share perspectives, and explore opportunities for continuing dialogue to translate course content into practical applications in day-to-day library work.

This workshop is suitable for library staff as well as supervisors and managers who are interested in embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural respect and recognition into library practice.

Presenter Bio
Dr Kirsten Thorpe (Worimi, Port Stephens), Associate Professor, is a Chancellor’s Indigenous Research Fellow at Jumbunna Research. Kirsten leads the Indigenous Archives and Data Stewardship Hub, which advocates for Indigenous rights in archives and data and develops research and engagement about refiguring libraries and archives to support the culturally appropriate ownership, management and ongoing preservation of Indigenous knowledges. Kirsten has broad interests in research and engagement with Indigenous protocols and decolonising practices in the library and archive fields and the broader GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) sector. Kirsten advocates for the ‘right of reply’ to records, and capacity building and support for the development of Living Indigenous Archives on Country.
