Presentation Title:
Creating a reading culture
Presenters:
Angela Savage, Christine Peters
Presentation Date:
Wednesday 13 May 2026 | 3:30pm – 4:00pm
Presentation Description:
Victorian public libraries reported a 23% increase in the provision of facilitated book clubs in 2023-24 and a further 15% in 2024-25. Keen to find out more about what was behind this sharp uptick, Public Libraries Victoria launched a statewide survey that generated a wealth of intel, and commissioned a selection of case studies to demonstrate a range of innovative, community-oriented book club models. This presentation will showcase key findings of the survey and case studies, providing insights into the drivers of the ongoing book club boom and how Victoria’s public libraries are responding to growing community demand.
The Big Summer Read has become a flagship initiative for Victorian public libraries, engaging thousands of children in reading over the summer holidays and helping to combat the “summer slide” in literacy. Drawing on insights from statewide collaboration, data collection, and community engagement, Christine will outline how the Big Summer Read has grown from a local initiative into a scalable model with national potential. The session will highlight the benefits of a unified approach—shared branding, streamlined resources, and collective impact—and discuss the challenges and opportunities of cross-state collaboration.
